November 10

Good Morning

Yesterday started brightly and sunny and -15° C so I decided it would be a good day to travel north and look for owls. Cold weather forces birds to eat more often and owls will sometimes come out during the day to hunt along the edges of roads. I drove two hours north of Edmonton to an area called Cross Lake. I checked out some snowy owl locations as I went north but they haven’t arrived yet ( or maybe I just didn’t see them). By the time I reached Cross Lake Provincial Park, the clouds had rolled in and the sky darkened. I came across some Canada Jays. These are highly intelligent birds and they were teasing me by imitating the calls of  Northern Hawk Owls and Pygmy Owls. I wandered down a few trails before I recognized their deception. I am sure Connor would have figured it our much quicker. I headed over to an area named Dapp and was successful in finding two Great Grey Owls as dusk was approaching. I stayed with them until sunset under the overcast sky and got home before the snow started to fall again.

Stay well, remember and reflect.
