June 23

Hi

I went to Manitoba from June 6 to 15. It was first time that I have stayed in Manitoba for more than one night. I stayed around Winnipeg for a few days exploring the birding areas around the city. There are lots of good birding spots within 45 minutes of the city. Winnipeg gets some species that don’t come this far west,

Also a lot of ticks, so be aware when hiking in the woods. My record was 14 in one day even when I was taking precautions. I gave up and birded from the road.

Then I went up to Churchill with a birding group led by a young guide from Calgary. The guide was 20 and I was the youngest guest! It was a very good group and we saw lots of birds. I was hoping to see some of the birds that migrate through Alberta in their breeding plumage and was succesful with many. The sea ice had blown up against the west side of Hudson’s Bay so some of the birds that would have dispersed were still in the river.

I saw 172 birds and saw one lifer (Little Gull) and heard another (Eastern Whippoorwill).

Stay Well !
