April 1

We had an interesting day today. Connor and I left home at 6:30 am to get an early start on the owls. We called some friends in Toronto (they were the only ones awake) as we drove north. As we were speaking, a Long Eared Owl flew into the tree in their front yard! Amazing! Connor and I have only seen one once.

We were fortunate to find 3 Great Grey Owls, 3 Rough Legged Hawks, 3 Red-tailed Hawks, 2 Northern Harriers, 1 Bald Eagle and 1 Merlin on our journey today.

I think we are confused by the lack of snow into thinking it is spring. I have spent a lot of time south of Edmonton looking for spring migrants. Normally at this time of year we have lots of snow and are still searching for owls. So we were successful in finding a co-operative Great Grey around 8 am this morning. it was fun to photograph it against a grass background rather than snow.

Stay well !
