August 20

I thought I would share a few raptors with you today. When Connor and I went to southern Alberta and Saskatchewan, we got to see Prairie Falcons, Golden Eagles and Ferruginous Hawks. They are much more common there than around Edmonton.

This week, I was fortunate to find a very co-operative Peregrine Falcon east of Edmonton. These are the fastest birds in the world. They can fly at about 110 kph in straight flight and an amazing 390 kph in a dive. The subspecies in Western Canada is Falco peregrinus anatum which means Duck Falcon. Which explains why I found it eating a duck! After it was done, it retreated to a power pole where I was able to approach it quite closely.

Stay well !
