April 19

It is Sandhill Crane migration time. The Sandhill Crane is one of the few cranes in the world that is not endangered. Over 450,000 of them congregate in Platte River, Nebraska on their annual migration from southern US to Canada. We saw around 5,000 about two hours east of Edmonton. They are very skittish when they are up here but more approachable on their winter grounds. I saw the in Bosque del Apache, New Mexico a few years ago. The reserve there grows corn and cuts down a few rows every day to feed them.

Their mating dance consists of high leaps and low bows.

Stay well !
