Today’s image is a Gyrfalcon. This species lives in the Arctic and travels south to Alberta in the winter. For several years, we had one that came regularly to the inland grain terminal in downtown Edmonton to feed on pigeons each day. We were spoiled.

For the last two years, we have only found them in the countryside. We saw this one last week at Keephills Power Plant Cooling Ponds. It was there to hunt the ducks which stay through the winter due to the open water. I only saw one last year and this one this year, so it is a special bird for the year.

Stay well !
