Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary

On June 8, 2019, Connor and I flew from Edmonton to Prince Rupert B.C for a one day trip. On British Columbia’s far north coast, lies the Khutzeymateen: “Valley of the Grizzly”. With an abundance of wildlife, the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary is the first area in Canada to be protected and has the highest concentrations of grizzly bears in North America. We boarded a charter boat and headed 3 hours north of Prince Rupert to see the grizzly bears bulking up on protein rich sedge grass and clams. Along the way , we also saw Orca, Humpback whales and a variety of seabirds. On the way back to harbour, the ship’s captain stopped the boat to chum the bald eagles. As the eagles are familiar with this behavior, 20 or so circled the boat while we fired off photographs as fast as we could.
