Under the Influence of Bob

"I can't conceive of anything being more varied and rich and handsome than the planet Earth. And its crowning beauty is the natural world. Whether it's here in Ontario or in the Antarctic or in Africa, I want to soak it up, to understand it as well as I can, and to absorb it. This is the way I want to dedicate my work."

Robert Bateman, 1981

Over the years, I have looked at my images and sometimes said to myself, "That's a Bateman." Robert Bateman has a distinctive style and his realistic paintings look like wildlife photographs. I sat down with Connor recently to introduce him to Bateman's work through some books that we have. Yes, actual hard-cover books from the 1980's. As we went through them, I became inspired to put together this book. The images I selected are one's I feel have some essence of a Bateman painting. Some I have used artistic license to alter the photographs to look more like a paintings. Others are left pretty much as they came out of the camera. Either way, they embrace the '"steal like an artist" spirit of Austin Kleon.
