In September of 2015, my good friend Kelly Detheridge and I ventured into the Great Bear Rainforest in search of Spirit Bears. We boarded the Ocean Light ll in Kitimat and travelled down the Davis Strait to Gribbell Island. We spent five days on the island photographing the bears.

Spirit Bears are a sub-species of black bears that occur in British Columbia. They are concentrated on the coast but occur through the province. A double regressive gene gives them their blond coat.

When the bears were not around, we occupied our time photographing pine martin and American Dipper.
