Good Morning

Yesterday while watching the shorebirds, a peregrine falcon came in and tried to get some take-out. I have seen this behavior several times in the last couple of weeks. We will be watching some birds when all of a sudden they flush and in comes the falcon.

Normally the falcons having been coming in low but this one was diving down and swooping. They are the fastest birds in the world in a dive and can reach speeds of 320 km/hr. The dives I saw were not that fast but they were too quick for me to follow. Exciting to watch but the falcon left without lunch and the shorebirds were scattered everywhere.

The first image is from Whitford Lake taken last week where a falcon was using the low approach. The second is from yesterday when the falcon was leaving.

There are at least three nest boxes set up on tall buildings in Edmonton and a couple are viewable on webcams. There is a good chance that the falcon I saw yesterday is from one of them.

Stay well
