October 2

The geese migration is in full swing. I was out on Thursday and I estimate that I saw over 40,000 geese.

There are two main types migrating right now; snow geese and greater-white fronted geese. Mixed in with flocks are a couple of smaller types: Ross’s Geese and Cackling Geese. And of course there are Canada geese but not in the large numbers yet.

Here is a close-up of a a small section of a pond that had about 5000 geese packed-in tight. These are Greater-white Fronted Geese.

Snow Geese and Greater-white Fronted Geese.

Snow Geese are the large white Geese. Greater-white Fronted Geese are the dark geese. There are five Ross’s Geese in this picture. They are white like snow geese but are smaller and a have a smaller, shorter bill.

Most Snow Geese are white like the one on the right. But there is a dark phase as well. From left to right, this picture has a light phase juvenile, dark phase adult, dark phase juvenile, and a light phase adult.

These are not Canada geese. They are Cackling Geese, They are smaller than Canada geese and have shorter necks and smaller bills.

Here are some Cackling Geese with Canada geese

Stay well !
