A beautiful day in Edmonton. I started at -11°C and rose to 7°C by the afternoon. I had a good day and saw four Great Grey Owls and one Northern Hawk Owl. I got some very nice Great Grey images but thought I would share this Pileated Woodpecker image. I could hear the woodpecker drumming and calling in the woods. It decided to harass the Northern Hawk-owl and flew to the adjacent tree. It made a lot of noise, flapped around and then left. I managed to get this shot as it flew away. This is my best flight shot of a Pileated ever.
Pileated Woodpeckers are year round residents and are very large. I think Woody Woodpecker was modeled after then.
