April 16

One of the annual trips Connor and I have enjoyed over the past few years is going out to Wainwright during this week in April to visit our friends Sheldon and Carrie and go the sharp-tailed grouse lek. One must be on site before it gets light so we normally leave Sheldon’s around 4:30 am and drive about an hour to the lek. We get set up in blinds in the dark. Last year it was fairly nice, around 0° C with no snow on the ground.

Once the male grouse start to dance on the lek and the sun starts to shed some light from beneath the horizon, we fire away. It truly is the golden hour. We stay until about 9 am, then go back to Wainwright Husky gas station diner for a breakfast of bacon and eggs .

Stay Well !
